Mediterranean food is not just another plate on the table, it's a way of life. In a visit through the outskirts of the Mediterranean ocean, it would not be uncommon for you to see friends talking over a plate of hummus, olive oil, warm pita, and pickled assortments. In many areas, you won't walk far before hearing a group of locals discuss politics with a mouthful of the country's finest falafel.
In your home, Mediterranean specialties can enrich any meal with nutrition and fresh flavor. This is your chance to go wild and here are a few tips to do just that.
Tip #1 - Cooking: Falafels are best served hot and cooking them right before serving makes a huge quality difference. Each falafel unit should have a crispy, golden exterior and a soft interior. When frying, it's very important to preheat the oil to about 350-375 °F ("Medium-High") before tossing the falafels in. We recommend using lowfat, zero cholesterol corn or canola oil. When baking, you may use the aluminum container itself after removing the printed lid, and simply bake until the falafels are soft and golden (300-375 °F, 20-30 min).
Tip #2 - Mix it up: We've developed 3 unique falafel flavors and more to come for you to try! Combine them together and enjoy the variety.
Tip #3 - Olive oil: Long ago, Mediterranean cultures discovered the tremendous nutritional value of extra virgin olive oil. It has since become a vital cooking element. Don't be afraid to use it.
Tip #4 - Hummus: The heart of Mediterranean dips, hummus is composed of cooked garbanzo beans, olive oil, garlic, sesame sauce (tahini), and lemon. You can make your own or dip into our All Natural Hummus without any additives or cholesterol.
Tip #5 - Sesame Sauce (Tahini): Despite it's looks, this classic Mediterranean sauce is dairy free, made only of grounded sesame seeds, lemon, and garlic. We add a hint of love to every batch and we recommend you do the same to anything you create. Fun fact: raw tahini is one of the few natural elements on earth that becomes more solid as water is added to it!
Tip #6 - Fresh Salads: Mediterranean meals are often served with fresh vegetables of many colors and flavors. Start by slicing and dicing a few fresh Roma tomatoes and Persian cucumbers mixed with a hint of lemon, olive oil, and salt to taste. You can go beyond this with some red and green cabbage, pickled condiments, bell peppers, etc.
Tip #7 - Pita pockets: Now, to put everything together, stuff your favorite flying falafel flavors (sesame, spicy, or parsley) and your favorite Mediterranean toppings all into a thick pita pocket bread.
